The Bluenose Bible: Match Report Barnsley away
Hi, I'm new to the forum and will be posting a 250ish word match report after each game but bare with me on the timing. Any advice is welcome and you can follow me on Twitter at @BluenoseBible
The tale of Davies: with Blues coming out on top
Unlikely goal scoring hero Curtis Davis scored a brace to guide Birmingham to their first win away since October against strugglers Barnsley at Oakwell.
However, the result could have been very different if Barnsley’s early pressure on the Birmingham defence finished with what would have been justified goal as Stephen Dawson’s long range effort was well held by keeper Jack Butland.
But Birmingham’s first real threat in the game in the 35th minute was taken by man of the match Davies as a near post corner by Rob Hall was headed home leaving goalkeeper Luke Steele stranded in no man’s land as Lee Clark’s men took a surprising lead.
It took just three minutes for the Tykes to equalise as several Barnsley chances in quick succession create space for Jonathan Greening on the edge of the box to score his first goal for the club. It wasn’t his only contribution as the midfielder played a key role throughout the game always looking for the ball and dictating the tempo of Barnsley’s possession.
After coming on in the 58th minute, Craig Davies had the chance to score his fifth goal against his Birmingham this season following Steven Caldwell handling in the box which resulted in a penalty. The boyhood Blues fan failed to take the chance as his penalty was smashed straight over the bar and kept the game in the balance.
His namesake made him pay as his header in the 77th minute from Rob Hall’s delicious free kick was met excellently by Curtis Davies just in front of the shaky Tykes goalkeeper.
