Blues’ show they’re no POSHovers in the relegation dogfight

Birmingham City came out on top in a huge relegation “6 pointer” at London Road thanks to goals from Nikola Zigic and Chris Burke that sent Peterborough bottom of the Championship table.

The home side started the better, however, as the extra man in midfield meant that Lee Tomlin able to find space for himself behind Dwight Gayle helped the home side dictate the play and look dangerous on the break.

One of the highlights of Peterborough’s early dominance was just before the 20 minute mark with Lee Rowe and Tomlin forcing a magnificent double save out of Jack Butland, leaving everyone at London Road speechless.

As the game developed, so did Blues’ confidence with possession and it wasn’t long after Butland’s heroics until The Blues made a crucial impact in a game both sides needed to win. Burke charged inside from the right and his shot could only be parried away from goal by Robert Olejnik. The ball fell kindly into Nikola Zigic’s path for the Serbian to fire home his seventh goal of the season. Just before half time Callum Reilly hit a fierce shot from 25 yards that cannoned off the crossbar.

Early appeals for penalties by the hosts were unsuccessful and Lee Clark’s men continued to applying the pressure which saw Peter Lovenkrands and Chris Burke go close to double their lead. With just ten minutes left Chris Burke eventually did add a second goal to the score line as another superb run by “The Scottish Messi” ended with a left shot that was deflected just under the Peterborough crossbar.

Man of the match: Jack Butland
