Stalemate at St. Andrews, the result neither side wanted

With a few of the teams winning around them, the last thing Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday needed was a goalless draw. But thanks to some superb saves and mind-blowing misses both defences can go home delighted with their respective performances.

The Owls set up in an organised manner and aimed to take advantage of their chances however they came. Dave Jones’ plan almost worked early on in the game; a corner from the right was headed powerfully by Miguel Llera towards goal from six yards and brilliantly saved by Jack Butland. The England international would have wished Roy Hodgson was in the crowd for his save of the season contender as the majority of the crowd were waiting to see another headed goal for the Spaniard.

One of the main talking points of the game was the return of Nikola Zigic to the host’s starting line up. The motivation and desire was there for all to see, although his lack of match fitness and inability to beat Llera and Martin Taylor in the air meant it wasn’t a comeback the home ground wanted to see. The giant Serbian’s big moment came when Chris Burke drilled in a low cross to the back post which Zigic got on the end of and poked wide from just five yards out.

Another return for the home side was that of Marlon King from injury. Similarly to Zigic, the club’s top scorer failed trouble the Wednesday defence due to a lack of match fitness and his only shot was hit straight at Chris Kirkland.

Man of the match: Jonathan Spector

Another excellent report, and you are spot on about King. He was obviously not fit.

Well done. blues flag
