Diouf’s penalty spurs Leeds into the fourth round
A goal and assist by El-Hadji Diouf ensured Leeds’ progression in the FA Cup to knock out Birmingham City and set up a fourth round tie against Tottenham at Elland Road.
After a fairly equal opening, Wade Elliott had the first meaningful chance by either side on the quarter of an hour mark. His shot was powerfully hit just past the left hand post following a terrific one- two between the midfielder and Marlon King.
With ten minutes to go in the first half Elliott took his second chance on goal to score a more forgettable goal than his stunner in the original tie. He calmly slotted home at the back post from a great ball across goal by Nathan Redmond that wasn’t dealt with the Leeds’ defence.
Neil Warnock’s team talk seemed to work as after half time Leeds came out fighting to get back into the tie and their efforts paid off as Ross McCormack scored on 70 minutes. A deep cross by Paul Green fell kindly to Diouf who passed it into the striker’s path to score his third goal of the season.
It got worse for Lee Clark and his side as former Leeds’ loanee Paul Robinson conceded a penalty for handball six minutes after the equaliser. El-Hadji Diouf stepped up and cooly chipped the penalty over Colin Doyle to send the 1500 Leeds’ fans into raptures.
The Blues responded with heavy pressure on the Leeds’ defence but efforts by Nikola Zigic and Peter Lovenkrands weren’t enough to beat Jamie Ashdown.
