Deeney double denies Blues six unbeaten

Boyhood Birmingham City fan Troy Deeney bagged a brace to help Watford on their way to a valuable three points in their challenge for promotion, leaving Lee Clark red faced following a quite embarrassing 24 hours.

Watford were the dominant side throughout the first half, with Deeney missing a chance in the 20th minute as his glancing header from an Almen Abdi corner trickled just past the post.
Following more pressure by The Hornets, Deeney opened the scoring eight minutes before half time for his 13th goal of the season. Paul Robinson gave Ikechi Anya plenty of space on the right and the wing back crossed to an unmarked Troy Deeney to head home from eight yards.

Ikechi Anya caused a lot of problems for Paul Robinson right the way through the match as another one on one situation ended with a goal, after a couple of stopovers hit a powerful shot from the edge of the area through Jack Butland.

Another goal from Deeney effectively killed the game off on the hour mark, when a counter attack by the travelling side was completed by a second for Deeney and a second assist for Anya who crossed the ball for the striker.

The home fans were singing for Nikola Zigic after he’d been dropped the day before, but wasn’t it Marlon King’s clinical finishing that could have given them a chance if he’d been on the end of Lovenkrands and Thomas’ late attempts?

Zola’s men made it four late on as Jack Butland palmed the ball away from Battocchio, which fell kindly to Almen Abdi who powered a shot home from 18 yards out.

Man of the match: Ikechi Anya
